Preservation Areas

What's a Preservation Area?An Easement in Gilmer County, Georgia

A Preservation Area (PA) is simply an area that warrants protection due to the presence of the following:

  • High quality habitats, both on the land in the water that have been in place for a certain period of time or have been operating before heavy human settlement.
  • Habitat for rare species of plants or animals
  • Significant geological features or historic sites
  • Protective buffer along waterways

Establishment and protection of an PA ensures natural diversity will continue, water quality will be maintained or improved, and provides opportunities for scientific research, environmental education, and might include activities such as prescribed burning, removal of invasive species and carrying out native species restoration, and maintenance of facilities primarily fences, and boundary signs.
